Frequently Asked Questions

Happy 2014!

We’re a super small shop, and we love spending most of our time choreographing and dancing with you, but we know you have questions, and we have answers! Below find some of your most burning questions, answered. Still got questions? Email us!

1. I want to sign up for the next round of classes, but it’s not on the website yet!
We’re so excited you want to shimmy with us! If it’s not on the website yet, that means we’re still working out the schedule with our studio. We always send semester announcements via our newsletter, so if you want to be in the very first round of people to know, sign up here.

2. I have no dance experience/am out of shape/have an injury. Can I still take the class?
Absolutely no dance experience is required to take our classes, and if you’re going to get in shape, why not dance and have fun while doing it!? In fact, burlesque dance style is very different from modern or ballet or even swing, so even if other students do have experience, everyone is on even footing! If you’re working with an injury, please make sure you’re cleared from your doctor, but if you are, we’ll do our best to modify the choreography for your movement needs.

3. Can I come and watch a class?
The short answer is no. The better answer is that because we’re putting on heels and strutting our stuff, we only allow participants in classes. While you can’t watch, you are totally welcome to purchase a drop in class at $15 and try it out. No commitment, just dance.

4. Do I have to get on stage?
Only if you want to! There is no performance for our 101, 201, or workshops, just you and your classmates. The only class that culminates in a stage performance is 301, and even then you may opt to take the class without performing.

5. I want to hire Freya, Shan and the Debs for an event!
Thank you! We’d love to be involved in making your party, corporate retreat, bachelorette or shindig more excellent. Email us, and I will check to make sure the date is available for myself/your requested performers and email you back lickity split!

Acting Your Act: Storytelling Through Burlesque, (Level 2)
Instructor: Üla Überbusen
Time: 7:30-8:30
Cost: $30

This is an intermediate level workshop — for people who took the first level of the workshop, or who have been performing for 3 years or more.

Building on the foundations taught in the first level of this workshop, Üla takes you even deeper into the nuances of good acting and good storytelling. Drawing on her extensive training in acting, theatre and dance, Üla teaches the art of storytelling through the medium of burlesque. Using techniques found in her mentor’s book, “The Actor As Storyteller,” this workshop takes an even more in depth look at acting skills and specificity of movement to form a clear narrative. You will learn how to create a believable, well-rounded character, explore the nuances of comedic timing, and learn how to have a stronger connection to your audience.
Please bring a notebook and wear clothes and shoes for comfortable movement.

Floor Work and Booty Popping
Instructor: Porcelain
Time: 8:30-9:30pm
Cost: $30

In this class, students will be getting down right dirty… in the sexiest & classiest way possible of course! Absolutely no amount of flexibility or dance experience is required, and all body shapes welcome! You don’t need to be doing splits left and right to master the art of floor work (though it certainly never hurts!). Students will learn how to master the art of leg work, creating sexy shapes with their bodies, and graceful ways of getting down and up off the floor. The second part of this class will address the ever popular, basic booty popping movement! Several variations of popping and shaking technique will be covered as well as one-cheek-at-a-time control. Bodacious booties will celebrate this class’s techniques in subtlety AND the full enchilada! Students should wear comfortable exercise type clothing and bring an open mind & sexy attitude!

**See them perform Friday 3/22 at Bongo After Hours Theatre with special local guest Truvy Trollop!**
